Heart failure: ACE inhibitor or ARB prescribed
Clinical Quality & Outcomes
How this indicator is defined
Methodology version v1.0
Percentage of rostered patients with heart failure who have an active ACE inhibitor or ARB prescription.
Proportion of eligible patients (composite)
The percentage of eligible patients (the denominator) who meet ANY of these criteria: ACE inhibitor prescription (within 1 year) OR ARB prescription (within 1 year). Each patient is counted once.
Data inputs
- ACE inhibitor prescription
- ARB prescription

What this indicator measures— Name, alignment, goal, rationale.
- Indicator nameField 1 — Indicator name
- Heart failure: ACE inhibitor or ARB prescribed
- AlignmentField 2 — Alignment
- Canadian Cardiovascular Society Heart Failure Guidelines
- Ontario Health MyPractice Primary Care indicator catalogue
- Strategic goalField 3 — Strategic goal
- Ensure patients with heart failure receive guideline-concordant renin-angiotensin system inhibition, which reduces mortality and hospitalization.
- RationaleField 5 — Rationale
- ACE inhibitors and ARBs are interchangeable first-line therapy for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction; a patient on either is appropriately treated, so the measure counts either prescription.
How it's computed— Scoring method, numerator, denominator, inclusions, exclusions.
- NumeratorField 6 — Numerator
- Active rostered patients in the denominator with an active ACE inhibitor OR ARB prescription documented in the EMR medication list as of reporting-period end.
- DenominatorField 7 — Denominator
Active rostered patients with heart failure, age 18+ at reporting-period end.
- Sex eligibility: F, M
- Age range: 18–120
- Active as of reporting-period end: yes
- ExclusionsField 9 — Exclusions
- Patients with documented intolerance/contraindication to both ACE inhibitors and ARBs.
- Patients deceased before the reporting-period end date.
